The decline in population in Hungary since 1981 has opened door for international students to live and pursue their higher education in this country. Most of the international students come to pursue full time degree in medical programs, as Hungary is popularly known for its medical schools.

Hungary is found in central Europe with an estimated population of over 10 million people. Right from 2004, it has been a member state of the European Union and this has afforded students the opportunity to discover other parts of Europe while earning a higher education degree.

Cost of living in Hungary

Costs of living in Hungary are actually cheap and affordable. It’s estimated at 450 to 500 Euros per month which will cover the cost of accommodation, food, books and minor needs like internet subscription. But it solely depends on the individual involved.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees in Hungary are very low and affordable when compared to other European countries. Students with best academic records usually benefit from the State-Funded program, where the government of Hungary pays the tuition fees of students selected.

If you are an EU student or come from a country that has reciprocal agreement with Hungary, you may qualify for the “State-Funded” student.

International students, non EU and students who don’t fall within the “State-Funded” category will have to pay tuition fees ranging from 1000 to 3000 Euro per academic year.

They may also be required to pay some registration fees ranging from 40 to 700 euro depending on the course they take. Tuition fees for bachelor’s degrees are approximately EUR 1000 per academic year on average, while tuition fees for master’s degrees are EUR 1500 per semester on average.

How to apply and Admission requirements in Hungary

You do not need to take any special admission tests before getting admitted into the Hungarian universities. The only requirement is the proof of proficiency in English language if you are picking up course in English.

Latest Admission Requirements for International Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD Studies at the Universities in Hungary

Students in Hungary are ranked based on their previous studies when applying for a study place at higher education institution.

This ranking is based on the student’s grade point average from previous studies and even works experience if applying for specific programs that require it.

Therefore, always check with your university/colleges in Hungary about the minimum passing grade you need to meet.

Undergraduate entry Requirements/First cycle studies (Bachelor’s)

  • High School/Secondary School result/certificate translated into Hungarian or English with the corresponding transcript of courses and grades

Postgraduate entry Requirements/Second cycle studies (master’s)

  • A relevant Bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma

Doctorate entry Requirements/Third cycle studies (PhD)

  • A relevant diploma or master’s degree program

Language requirements for studies at universities in Hungary

Hungarian:

  • If your course will be in the Hungarian language, you will need to provide test results showing proof of your proficiency in the Hungarian  language

English language:

If you are a student that will be taking up studies in English language, you will be requested to prove your level of command of the English language. Consequently, you may present the results obtained at internationally recognized examinations, like the TOEFL test, IELTS test or pass an exam at the Hungarian institution where you will be studying.

For EU students, you may also ask your institution to examine your English studies from upper high school/secondary school to learn whether they are sufficient for you to meet the language requirement. Students from English speaking countries who have received their upper secondary education in English are sometimes exempted from passing any English language examination.

For English language, these test results are accepted

  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Grade C
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade B and TEEP
  • Between 5.0 – 6.0 in IELTS test or between 60 and 80 in TOEFL test for bachelor’s diploma
  • Between 5.5 and 6.5 in IELTS or between 70 and 90 in TOEFL test for master’s diploma

German:

For education programs offered in other languages – E.g. German – there will be certain requirements for your German skills.

N/B: Entrance examinations, offered at stipulated locations all over the world, may be required for some courses. You will need to check this out with the university you wish to attend.

For students that have not taken or passed the university entrance examination in their home country (non EU student only) you will most probably need to enrol in a preparatory course at the institution you are interested in before applying for higher education studies.

The preparatory courses aim at providing students with the required level of knowledge in basic subjects to access the selected study program. These preparatory courses last at most 2 semesters and students are charged tuition fees that vary depending on the program and institution.

You can only apply to universities in Hungary via the UCAS.

Szeged University

This University is unanimously considered as the best university in Hungary and is, also, known as one amongst the prestigious universities in Europe that offers a variety of courses.

Scholarships 

The Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture awards scholarships to the most brilliant international students through Hungarian Scholarship Board Office.

These Scholarships are offered under bilateral systems as well as scholarship pool systems. Various kinds of scholarships provided in Hungary to international students are as follows:

Semester studies; in this particular scholarship, the student is given a monthly stipend of ~HUF 40,460. Accommodation of the student is also managed by the university for which the student has to pay.

Postgraduate studies; A monthly stipend of ~HUF 79,200 along with ~HUF 70,000 monthly accommodation allowance is awarded. For scholarships shorter than 21 days, a daily stipend of ~HUF 1000 is given.

Full PhD studies; A monthly stipend of ~HUF 100, 00 and accommodation within the university residence is provided for which the student has to pay.

Partial PhD; Similar as full PhD just for a shorter duration.
